Cooled track in Kontiolahti ready on shedule

Cooled 1,5 km ski track on Kontiolahti Biathlon Stadium will be complete as planned. The completion of cooled ski track guarantees the possibility to have biathlon competitions in Kontiolahti as early as in October and November regardless of weather conditions.

The cooling pipework has been installed and the track will be covered in asphalt by the end of August. In early September the refrigeration system will be installed and the pipework will be filled with 80,000 litres of environmental friendly freezium liquid. The pipework consists of 1,5 km skeletal pipe structure (diameter 20-35 cm), and 65 km of cooling pipes (diameter 25 mm) set 10 cm apart. Compressor power of the system is 850 kW.

The length of the cooled ski track is 1,5 km which includes a shooting range of 32 lanes. Width of the track on trail is 4 meters, including a trail for classic as well as free style. On shooting range the cooled ski track is 8 meters wide. The shooting range has always excellent permanent conditions for training and competitions as early as in October.

There is 10,000 m³ snow stored from last winter for the cooled ski track and its additions (approximately 1,5 km). The track is ready for skiing the 1^st October. As early as possible in October, the cooled track will be completed to 3 km by making additional track of the stored snow on unfrozen ground.

There are also plans for expanding the cooled ski track with additional 1 km. This part of the track will include a climb and a downhill section. The climb will be 300 m long and the trail will be 6 meters wide in the climb.
